Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
Smith started strong, but then the gap in skill showed and he did well to last the distance. Barrera is one of those guys who gets hurt but doesn't stay hurt long.
Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
Thats why you cant rely on punching power alone, no matter how hard you hit.
Barrera vs Gvozdyk would be a feast. Make it happen.

Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
Smith had a puncher's chance, but was shut out easily after round one. Totally out classed. Commentators were annoying, but I agree it shows just how good Ward is, the way he handled Barrera.

Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear something was wrong with Joe coming into the fight. He did not fight like usual at all, and there seemed to be more to it than Barrera's ability.
Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
Why's that? Son of Judges didn't look especially good against Barrera, was hit routinely with the jab which was on more display against Kovalev.Badhusker wrote:Smith had a puncher's chance, but was shut out easily after round one. Let's see how Krushedner does v Barrera.Blodhemn wrote:Why's that? I just don't think most people realize how skilled Ward is, and don't think he is given credit because people hate him. If it was Kovalev that won their two fights, most people would rank him #1pfp without question. Barerra was a very accomplished amateur, and is quite skilled as far as I can see. I thought considering the competition, Ward did very well vs Barerra. I think Barerra would give Kovalev all he could handle, and then some. I think Kovalev is a much better boxer than Smith, but with less power.
Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
Am i the only one who thought barrera won against ward?
Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
Ward didn't outclass Barrera, though. You're drinking the HBO Kool-Aid. A lot of people thought Ward didn't look great. Also, Barrera went into the Ward fight with no experience at the top level. Dude was still very much in the prospect stage of his career.Badhusker wrote:Smith had a puncher's chance, but was shut out easily after round one. Totally out classed. Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
Barrera won the fight. Nobody outclassed nobody. It was a okay fight where both landed a lot on the guard or punched in the air. Classic home descision. Barrera landed the clearer punches, snapped ward head a couple of times back. Barrera ud win, kovalev ud win, kovalev II dq win. Ward lost these 3 fights. All gifts. He wont never face bertebiev or gvozdyk. Those guys dont gass after 6 rds and have equal or more punching power than kovalev..Mexi-Box wrote:Ward didn't outclass Barrera, though. In your expert opinion, has Ward ever won a legitimate boxing match, or did he win because of a hometown advantage or by cheating?Jip wrote:Barrera won the fight. Nobody outclassed nobody. I could see not liking a fighter, but this is just plain stupidity. Ward CLEARLY won the Barrera fight. Kovalev won both fights, but then you claim he gassed after 6 rounds, so basically finding an excuse as to why he lost......
Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
Ward's skill comes from in close, and judging by history, not many fighters of that mold get a lot of credit, since it's ugly boxing. Barrera is good, but I wouldn't put him much above Chilemba really. Both are *solid* but lack just enough to be champs. Kovalev did *win* the first fight, but didn't get official credit, which pretty much derailed his career. Don't have much sympathy for Ward.Badhusker wrote:I just don't think most people realize how skilled Ward is, and don't think he is given credit because people hate him. Probably pretty well since it'd be a fight at a more comfortable range, unless Kovalev is dead at the weight, which is a possibility.Tanzio wrote:Let's see how Krushedner does v Barrera.

That wasn't a question. I would like to see that fight. SOGgy beat them both, Krushedner twice.

It is official, SOGgy is the only boxer to defeat each of them. It only makes sense that they fight each other.Blodhemn wrote:Not really.Tanzio wrote:That wasn't a question. If you need loopy logic to justify a fight then it probably isn't the best one to be made. Since they're both with Duva and haven't fought yet, I doubt it happens, but maybe you'll get your wish for this highly sought after fight.Tanzio wrote: It is official, SOGgy is the only boxer to defeat each of them. Kovalev won, but didnt look great doing it. Him gassing after 6 was poor. Yet it was enough to win the first fight. Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
Joe Smith got lucky, they threw him in the deep end of the pool and he got a boxing lesson, without getting his brains scrambled too bad. Hopefully he was taking notes. I am sure he will be better fighter after this experience.
Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
Just like i figured...Smith is a nice story with some power but he's a one trick pony. If he doesn't land a bomb, most legitimate light heavies will pick him apart like SB did. I would still like to see Smith fight again. Why they decided to put him in there with SB at this point is silly IMO. Let the kid be a full time boxer for a year first.

I had to look back on the fight to make sure I wasn't mistaken. Barerra was competitive, but was beaten with no questions.
The Scoring: 117-109, 117-109, 119-107. Barrera went down once in Round 3. Barerra has had two fights since then, and the Ward fight was in March of 2016. It was also Ward's first fight at 175.
Maybe you should try some Kool-Aid.
Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
Thing is, I'm not at all saying Barrera won. My point still stands, though. It was competitive throughout. It wasn't close, but people cited that fight as Ward declining. I also give zero fcks what the judges scorecards are for any fight. The fact that you cite them tells me a lot about you.Badhusker wrote:Mexi-Box wrote:Ward didn't outclass Barrera, though. Re: Joe Smith vs Sullivan Barrera
Yeah, that fight against Barrera is what sealed the deal for me picking against SOJ vs Kovalev. Got hit by too many jabs, though still won. It's revisionist history to say SOJ looked great there, but that's Kellerman's way of daydreaming over his favorites while others are fighting.
