I had no idea of that! Thanks Caractacus!Caractacus wrote: ↑19 May 2018, 11:27 I think Lyle and Ken Norton signed a contract to fight in 1977.
But Norton's camp pulled out and Lyle won a judgement of $ 150,000 for it a couple years later.
1977 should have been the year they actually fought,
because Norton originally retired from the ring after the fight with Earnie Shavers in March 1979,
( he came out of retirement just a few months later because he just bought an expensive house and needed a couple million dollars)
and Lyle was tied up in a murder trial in 1978.

Norton did fall downwards toward the canvas but the elastic ropes caught him propped him up and put him on his feet again
enough for him to stagger around in a daze..
LaDoux wasn't able to go forward and mount an attack in those last seconds because Norton's back was completely towards him

"Lyle lasted nearly three times longer than Norton against Cooney."
I guess that's accurate, but it's like the old Billy Preston tune---"Nothing from Nothing leaves Nothing."

Re: Norton vs Lyle in October 1979
or the fight could have been scheduled for late 1974 or 1975 shortly after Lyle's win over Jimmy Ellis.
all I know is that in late 1978 Ron Lyle reportedly won the lawsuit for breach of contract..
( it is mentioned in the book OFF THE ROPES but no details mentioned)

Re: Norton vs Lyle in October 1979
I don't know how anyone can argue with passion about something so subjective. Although I realize that it's done here all the time.
It's safe to say that by October 1979, both Lyle and Norton were passed their best days.
Norton's skills leveled off dramatically after the classic Holmes fight in 1978.
And Lyle probably started a slow trek downward after his battle royal with Foreman in 1976.
Norton's aging legs looked shot against trial horse Ledoux. He barely hung around to deserve the verdict. Months earlier Shavers took him apart in minutes.
Lyle would get iced quickly by journeyman Ball shortly after the projected October 1979 date.
Where's the certainty come from that one of these eroded warriors could beat the other?
Both were in decline. Lyle was slow and ponderous. The shots were heavy but didn't have the same thunderous snap as years earlier.
Norton, whose legs were always stiff, now could barely move forward. From the waist up he seemed to still be a capable fighter, but he stuttered and wobbled whenever he was hit solidly.
I'd slightly favor Norton who still hand much better hand speed than Lyle at this point.
But I'm a gambler. And I wouldn't touch that fight if offered 5-1.

I looked it up. 16 year old Mexican boy.
I was expecting 16 year old girl fan.

With Ron Lyle's (split decsion) win over Scott LeDoux in May 1979.
Lyle was in line for a shot at Big John Tate's WBA HW title if he could get past
Marty Monroe (but he ddin't of course because he was knocked out in the second round December 1979).

yeah,Lynn Ball.
I was thinking Kalan might actually be Marty Monroe.(born 1954)
I think Kalan said in one of his posts he was 63 years old.

But Kalan was reputed to be (by his own accounts) the hardest puncher anyone had ever seen. Especially some fanboy ring announcer.Caractacus wrote: ↑21 May 2018, 20:12 yeah,Lynn Ball.

Monroe was a decent, but not outstanding puncher.

Marty Monroe was a sparring partner to Ron Lyle, and I think he broke Lyle's nose
when Lyle was preparing to fight Lynn Ball.

It's really sad. They say he was molested by someone he knew, and he told his mother, and she didn't believe him. What happened with concerning the 16 year old was just WRONG.
