Hmmmmm the story gets more complex.

I am thinking Joe may have been taken advantage of…
Was not financially educated… didn’t keep his eyes on the business side. I can see him being the kind of guy that’s too trusting… now doesn’t know how to deal with the whole disaster so is not writing anymore cheques.

Joe has given his health for the money he has earned. Without knowing more I lean towards Joyce was exploited
Based on what though? So many sportsmen end up broke. They will get targeted by investors for all sorts of things, properties, gold, crypto, some sort of business venture so being sold a dream is common place, people of all walks of life lose their life savings and pensions the same way. They aren't always scams, just not always the wise move if you can't afford to lose that investment. Or he was just silly and spent too much and didn't plan for tax, that seems to be the main issue. I have no idea what the other debt is for, that just sounds like JJ hasn't paid his bills.
Yeah you could well be correct. I’m just going intuitively and knowing how dishonest most people are

Yes it’s very sad and not a story I expected or wanted to hear.

The fact that Joyce was thrown in with Zhang twice after beating Parker while Dubois was rewarded with a title shot against Usyk tells you everything you need to know about the way Joyce was managed.

We all know he was never supposed to beat Dubois that night. Couple fights later, Dubois wins the WBA Interim belt.

Why could Joyce not go in for that?

During his physical prime from 2019 to 2021, Joyce usually fought at 254–265lbs. He was fitter, more mobile and able to maintain the relentless work rate that made his “Juggernaut” style so effective.

Now, at 41, he is carrying about 35lbs of excess weight. This makes his already slow hands and feet even slower and prevents him from sustaining his former high work rate.

Although Joyce is clearly well past his physical prime, I think he could perform much better than he did against Suslenkov, Hrgović and Chisora if he completed a full training camp and fought at around the 255lbs mark.

However, I do not think that will happen. He now boxes only to pay the bills. There is no shame in that, but fighters need more motivation than money alone to perform at their best.

How many fighters admit to being shot. Most are delusional, that's why we see old fighters still claiming to be as good as ever, Muhammad Ali a classic example. I think they truly believe it too, no one wants to admit they aren't the same anymore. JJ is talking past tense, listing his achievements as a younger man, trouble is the proof is in the pudding and we can only base him on his recent fights which he has looked awful and a shadow of his former self.

He was a legitimate top 5 guy at one point. Destroyed Dubois' eye with a jab and broke down Parker to knock him out. He got pasted by Zhang in the first fight and hasn't looked the same since. He probably stayed in the amateurs a bit too long so he didn't make enough money in the pro's because he didn't do it for long enough to pick up paychecks crushing cans for years and father time caught up before he could get a belt and get big money.

Seems a nice enough bloke but doesn't appear to have any of the characteristics to continue in the sport after he's retired. Has to continue trying to make the money while he can but it's quite clearly having a hugely detrimental effect on his health.

It’s tragic really, considering Joe is one of the most likeable guys and doesn’t seem like he wastes his money on crap like Mayweather. It almost seems like delusion is a side effect of CTE. Not being able to see how badly you have deteriorated.

joe had a really good run, breaking the much fancied dubois with some surprisingly good skills, first to stop parker. wins over other former contenders or champs. all the titles below world level. it's a shame it's turned this way

Voluntarily fighting Zhang when he was (I think) already mandatory for one of the belts must be one of the all time mis-steps.

Wasn’t he interim world champion at one point? Going into the Zhang fight? Not that that means a lot……

Edit - he won it against Joe Parker
