In 1956 Alonzo Johnson won the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions at light heavyweight and he also won the Intercity Golden Gloves' light heavyweight championship vs. Ernie Terrell.
He was Muhammad Ali's sparring partner. In 1975, Johnson was stopped in two rounds by former World Heavyweight Champion George Foreman in an exhibition match, in which Foreman took on five opponents.
