In 1934 he made the final of the New York Daily News Golden Gloves' open championship at welterweight with the verdict being awarded to Joey Ferrone and representing New York he won an Intercity Golden Gloves' championship in the 2nd division vs. Robert LaMonte at welterweight. Andre Jessurun was Jewish per both the Hank Kaplan Archives and The Asbury Park Press March 8, 1940. He was of Sephardic heritage and his parents immigrated from Suriname to New York. Andre was born in Suriname but his parents moved to New York when he was four years old.

Ranked by The Ring as the number 7th Welterweight in the world between 1937 and and 1941. The NBA ranked Jessurun as the number 5 welterweight in the world in 1938. Fellow boxer Al Reid was Jessurun's brother-in-law. And when Jessurun was good he was very good defeating the great Cocoa Kid twice, and other world-class fighters like Steve Belloise, Ralph Zanneli, Vittorio Venturi, Young Gene Buffalo,Tony Falco, Frankie Saia, Johnny Clinton, George Salvadore and Frankie Britt just name a few.
