Timeline

  • Breazeale was scheduled to fight Charles Martin on December 12, 2015, however Martin withdrew from the bout just days away, after being elevated to the IBF mandatory challenger, and went on to fight Vyacheslav Glazkov for the vacant IBF title. "I wanted to do both of the fights," Martin said. "My team is the one that talked me out of it. I was up [in Big Bear Lake] making plans to do both. With the conversation with my coaches, I'm like, 'I can do this fight. I can get this [title shot] another way. Then I'm lined up right here.' My manager and everybody else, they're like, 'Hey, this is a world title opportunity. It's the opportunity of a lifetime. You fight for a world title. So we're pulling out. You're going to back to camp and get this belt.' I guess after a while it sunk in and it started to make sense. And I said, 'Hey, you know, whatever. Let's just do it because anything could happen.' You could get cut or something, any kind of crazy stuff that could have pulled me out of this fight."[1]
  • On December 29, 2015, it was announced that Breazeale would face Amir Mansour, ranked 19th by the WBC, on January 23.[2]
  • On January 20, Breazeale confirmed his plan to fight Martin for his title: "At this point, I’m thinking he owes me that. That’s the least he can give me by pulling out the same week as the fight."[3]
  • Three days later, Breazeale defeated Mansour after Mansour did not come out for the sixth round.
  • On February 5, Martin's promoter Leon Margules said in an interview that Breazeale was considered for Martin's first title defense, alongside Joshua, Chris Arreola and Artur Szpilka.[4] Nine days later, Martin signed to face Joshua.[5]
  • On April 9, Joshua stopped Martin in the second round, taking his world title.
  • On April 12, Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that he wanted to schedule Joshua's first title defense for July 9, however those plans would likely change as it was announced that Tyson Fury would rematch Wladimir Klitschko on that day in Manchester: "We could be difficult and go ahead that evening with AJ’s first IBF title defence and maybe a big fight for Kell Brook as well. If we can’t find another workable date we may have to do that but it is not ideal to have two world heavyweight title fights going up against each other."[6]
  • On April 18, Hearn stated that June 25 at O2 Arena in London was now the most likely option. He also added: "We expect the new IBF rankings to be out this week and with the interest from the U.S. I expect our next pick to be American. Names like Stiverne, Jennings, Molina and Breazeale are all in the mix and we are already planning a stacked card."[7][8]
  • On April 21, Joshua announced via Twitter that he would make his first defense on June 25 at O2 Arena, though not revealing the opponent.[9]
  • Bout formally announced on April 25 by Matchroom Sport.[10][11]

Ranking Movements

  • Brezeale unranked in the IBF rankings released January 4. He entered the rankings on February 4 at No. 15.
  • He would continue to gradually rise up the IBF rankings, moving to 14th on March 1 and 13th April 18. With No. 1 and No. 2 spots vacant, Breazeale was effectively the 11th highest-ranked contender.
  • On June 3, Breazeale jumped to No. 9. Joseph Parker became the No. 1 contender, while Kubrat Pulev was second.
  • He also went up in the WBC rankings from 27th (January) to 17th (February), as a result of a stoppage win over the previously 19th-ranked Amir Mansour. He further moved up two spots in the April rankings, becoming eligible for the WBC title shot. However, following the announcement of the Joshua fight, Breazeale was dropped from the WBC rankings entirely.

The Fight

  • Joshua dominated in every round, before dropping Breazeale with a barrage of punches in the seventh. Breazeale got up, after which Joshua continued where he left off, landing eight unanswered blows before Breazeale went down again. The ref stopped the fight without starting the count.[12][13]
