  • After losing the WBA Featherweight Championship to Steve Cruz in June 1986, McGuigan stayed out of the ring for almost two years. This was his fourth fight back.
  • There was a crowd of 8,000.
  • The fight was stopped in the fourth round due to a cut over McGuigan's right eye. The cut was caused by a McDonnell left hook in the second round.
  • McGuigan announced his retirement after the fight. "I said when I started my comeback that if I lost I would retire. I don't intend to reverse that," McGuigan said. "Boxing has been good to Barry McGuigan. I just say thanks."
