"Looking sharper than he has in the last two years, Pete Ranzany banged around crafty Clyde Gray and won by TKO in the 5th of a scheduled 12 rounder after a cut prevented Gray from continuing. After an even first round, Ranzany took charge in the 2nd. He moved forward with confidence and threw sharp, rapid combinations behind a stiff jab. A solid right cross landed on some old scar tissue above Gray's left eye and blood seeped out. In rounds two and three, Gray moved smartly, fought back, and caught Ranzany with some clean punches when he was stepping in. In the 5th, two right hand shots reopened and expanded the cut over Gray's eye. The referee summoned Dr. Montemeyer, who promptly halted the fight." -Ring Magazine, September 1979 issue

- "I have trouble fighting guys I've never heard of, cause it's hard for me to put everything into training. But I was up for Gray. It's easier for me to get prepared for a fighter with a big name." -Pete Ranzany
- "I thought I was doing pretty good. I was just getting started. He bangs pretty well and he was throwing a lot of combinations. I think they should have let the fight go on at least to the end of the round." -Clyde Gray
