- Davey Ward, from the very start of his professional career, was a protege of World Middleweight Champion Freddie Steele. For some of Ward's first bouts, Steele was in his corner. See the April 27, 1937 Tacoma News Tribune (TNT) newspaper for a photograph of the two, entitled "Steele and Pupil." According to the caption, Steele had been helping Ward for the previous six years and was scheduled to be in Ward's corner for his pro debut.
- According to the Sept. 4, 1943 TNT, Ward's father Jim had been the Light Heavyweight Champion of Great Britain, and was descended from boxer Jem Ward. Ward's family was from Scotland, arriving in Canada in 1914 before moving to the United States. Ward was the 9th of 11 children in his family.
