- Arguello was trained by Eddie Futch for his first fight with Pryor. He blamed Futch for the loss and fired him. He later apologized to Futch. "It was the biggest mistake of my life," Arguello said. He was trained by Lupe Sanchez for the Pryor rematch.

Lewis had his license revoked after he removed the padding from the gloves of Luis Resto before his fight with Billy Collins Jr. Pryor hired Richie Giachetti to train him, but they had a falling out. Two weeks before the Arguello rematch, Pryor brought in Emanuel Steward as his trainer.
