In 1939 Jimmy Reeves won the light heavyweight championship at the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions by decision vs. Shelton Bell and the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship at light heavyweight vs. Henry Jones. He also won the National AAU's light heavyweight championship, stopping Herman West, who had won 146 of his 150 fights, in the third round of finals held at San Francisco.
