- Started boxing at age 12 at the Northern Recreation Center in Detroit, Michigan.
- First amateur trainers were Albert Smith and Duke Ellis. He was later trained by Luther Burgess at the Brewster Recreation Center.
- 1963 Detroit Diamond Belt Champion.
- 1964 National Golden Gloves Lightweight Champion.
- 1964 United States Olympic Trials semifinalist at light welterweight.
- 1965 National AAU Welterweight Champion.
- 1966 National Golden Gloves Welterweight Champion.
Professional Career
- Managed by January Fighters Incorporated, which consisted of Dale Jackson, comedian Bill Cosby, singer Robert Goulet, and actors Ryan O'Neal and Chris Connely.
- Fought Jose Napoles for the World Welterweight Championship on December 14, 1971, and lost by a fifteen-round unanimous decision.
- Defeated Billy Backus by a fifteen-round unanimous decision to win the vacant New York State Athletic Commission World Welterweight Championship on June 16, 1972.
- Fought Jose Napoles for the World Welterweight Championship on August 3, 1974, and lost by a ninth-round TKO.
- Retired after losing to WBC World Welterweight Champion John H. Stracey by a tenth-round TKO on March 20, 1976.
- Inducted into the California Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006.
