Jimmy Archer won the 1955 New York Daily News Golden Gloves 147lb Open Championship. Archer ko'd Clyde Washington of the Empire Sporting Club in the second round to win the championship, then he won the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions and the Intercity Golden Gloves' championships in the welterweight divisions. Archer trained at the Mount Carmel City Youth Orgaization Gym in New York City. In 1969, he made a comeback after a 9-year layoff and won three fights.
Jimmy Archer is the brother of fellow boxer Joey Archer, and was his manager.
