Timeline

  • The result of their first encounter was widely regarded as controversial, as many pundits had Walcott winning. Because of this, the very next day after the fight, Louis' manager Marshall Miles agreed to stage a rematch in June at Yankee Stadium.[1][2] Louis backed the idea in a public statement released two days later.[3]
  • On December 17, Walcott's promoter Bocchicchio stated that his fighter would not have any matches in the interim, citing potential injury as the reason.[4]
  • Louis signed the contract on January 8[5]
  • On January 31, Louis confirmed that the Walcott rematch would be his last. He also emphasized that he didn't consider anybody else besides Walcott for his last fight.[6]
  • Walcott finally put his signature on the contract on February 27.[7]
