Quotes
- "The process of "Sovietization" of professional boxing is quite natural. Judge by yourself: the Americans used to dominate in the ring some time ago, and at the last Olympics, our heavyweight Viktor Zuev defeated Devin Vargas. In the recent matches between Belarus and the USA, our guys were also better" - Anatoly Grishchuk, head coach of Belarus national amateur boxing team
Belarussian is no coward!
By Dmitrii Komashko and Siarhei Goliasnik, Belarus Today, April 4, 2006
Hooray! Siarhei Liakhovich became world heavyweight boxing champion. The President congratulated the athlete on outstanding success.
This happens once every 100 years. The Belarusian became the world professional boxing champion. "I stayed on my feet in the ninth round solely due to my willpower. Lyakhovich deserved this victory, I take my hat off to him ... " - I don't think that on the eve of the fight Lamon Brewster, whose lips this revelation belongs to, could imagine such expressions. The journalists, gathered at the scent of the upset, hurriedly wrote down these revelations in order to publish them to the whole world. Like most experts, journalists do not consider the result of the fight for the WBO world title as anything else but upset. For them, the victory of the Belarusian heavyweight is akin to a knockout, in which Brewster, a recognized master of the one-punch knockout with the fitting nickname "Relentless", almost ended up.
However, those who truly knew about the abilities of the Belarusian predicted the emergence of a new champion. "Sergei is a very versatile boxer. If he shows all his best qualities, he will be able to go all 12 rounds against the American," said Svyatoslav Rantsev's fighter, PABA world champion Russian Alexander Vasiliev, one of Liakhovich's first "victims". More than 7 years have passed since that fight in Borisov, but the intuition, which already then suggested that he had a future star in front of him, did not deceive the experienced trainer. During the fight, the Belarusian slightly injured his left hand, was knocked down in the seventh round, but managed to pull himself together in the ninth - now the American had to look for the fifth corner...
"Lamon was a great champion. I knew he hit for real, hard. In addition, he has a strong will. But I answered him every time, and, in the end, he felt my power," the newly-crowned champion shared his first-hand impressions. "After the fourth round, I knew that I was in control of the fight, but Lamon also hit like a mule! I think I did the right thing when I took a knee at the end of the seventh round. By the way, I also almost put him out twice... "
"Liakhovich became world champion?! Defeated Brewster?! This is truly breaking news!" - those are the words of another Russian - WBA world heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev. For him, Liakhovich's victory was a complete surprise, especially in light of the fact that Brewster was considered as one of the likely "The Rock"'s opponents in a unification fight for the WBA and WBO titles. What awaits the world of professional boxing now? Some of the experts are already predicting a "Slavic dominance" in the world of boxing, predicting all 4 heavyweight belts to be held by immigrants from the former USSR at the end of this year (WBA - Nikolai Valuev, WBC - Oleg Maskaev, IBF - Wladimir Klitschko, WBO - Siarhei Liakhovich).
"Why not?", unlike most Western colleagues, the head coach of the Belarus national boxing team Anatoly Grishuk does not see an upset in Siarhei Liakhovich's victory. "They all came from amateur boxing, their fundamentals were instilled in them by our boxing school. The process of "Sovietization" of professional boxing is quite natural. Judge by yourself: the Americans used to dominate in the ring some time ago, and at the last Olympics, our "heavyweight" Viktor Zuev defeated Devin Vargas. In the recent matches between Belarus and the USA, our guys were also better."
There are enough smart guys among Belarusian amateurs who are ready to follow Liakhovich to the top spots of the world ratings in a couple of years. The same Viktor Zuev has a lot in common with Sergei Lyakhovich. Both started their journey in the same camp from which the Olympic champion Vyacheslav Yanovsky once entered the big sport, both fighters were nurtured by the same coach - the famous specialist from Vitebsk Anatoly Kolchin, both at different times were winners of the world championships. These "coincidences", you see, say a lot and give us a lot of hope..
