  • Dave Anderson of the New York Times reported:
In the opening round, Lewis's long jab kept Tua at bay, so much so that Tua hardly landed a punch. Lewis, ever cautious, resumed his jab-jab attack in the second but landed a low left hook that prompted the referee, Joe Cortez, to warn him to keep his punches up. Tua pounded Lewis with a left-right just before the bell.
In the third, Tua stalked Lewis, landing an occasional left hook as Lewis remained cautious, obviously wary of Tua's punching power. As the fourth began, Tua threw a lunging left but Lewis escaped and kept pawing with his jab.
Lewis opened up in the fifth, connecting with a hard right hand and later with a left jab-right hand combination. The sixth was delayed for maybe 30 seconds as the ring turnbuckle in Tua's corner had to be repaired, then Tua landed two big left hooks that Lewis appeared to shake off.
In the seventh, Lewis kept jabbing, jabbing, jabbing and piling up points as Tua seemed to be squinting through puffed cheekbones. In the eighth, Tua kept coming forward but seldom hit the elusive Lewis, who threw quick combinations and danced away.
Boos briefly serenaded the fighters in the ninth as Tua was unable to get under Lewis's jab, then Lewis exploded a hard left that spun the perspiration off the Samoan's face. As the 10th began, Tua appeared desperate, knowing he would need a knockout to win, but Lewis jolted him with two big right hands.
In the 11th, Lewis, his right glove cocked, appeared to be looking to land a knockout punch as he danced away from Tua, who was frustrated at not being able to get under the champion's jab. As the final round began, Tua, who had never been cut, had a bloodied left cheek as Lewis, still dancing and jabbing, completed his dominance.
