Jakubowski was a 1987 Clark graduate and boxer who began his amateur career at age 9. Marty was a 2-time Chicago Golden Gloves Open Division runner-up and Chicago Park District champion. Jakubowski compiled a 125-35 amateur record. At age 17, Marty turned professional and finished with a 118 - 7 pro record, including 52 consecutive victories. Entering his world title bout against Miguel Angel Gonzalez in 1995, Jackubowski had a record of 89-1. Jakubowski's record included 12 ND bouts, and not a single draw.
Jakubowski won regional titles such as the Mid-American and Mid-West belts and also the IBF/USBA title in 1994 and also fought for WBC World Lightweight, WBO World Lightweight and WBA Junior Welterweight World title belts during the 1990s. Jakubowski earned a top 10 ranking in all three of boxing's major sanctioning bodies: the WBA, the WBC, and the IBF.
