Willie Smith (of New York, NY)
In 1939 Harlem's Willie Smith, a southpaw from the Salem Crescent AC, won the New York Daily News Golden Gloves championship at lightweight vs. Charles Roberts, and representing New York he won an Intercity Golden Gloves title at lightweight by stopping Roy Lewis at 1:45 of the 1st round. Smith was reported to have been born in South Carolina.
In 1941 he won the New York Daily News Golden Gloves championship at lightweight vs. Jerry Moore, and representing New York won an Intercity Golden Gloves' title at lightweight vs. Emmett Grier.
It was reported that on June 9, 1937, as a member of the New York Team representing the United States vs. Italy, Smith won the title by KO in the 2nd round vs. Frederico Cortenesi in the featherweight division, at the so-called International Golden Gloves, at Yankee Stadium before a crowd of 55,000.
