  • Gamboa entered as the #2 jr. lightweight in the world according to The Ring Magazine. Perez, an 8-to-1 betting underdog, was unranked by the same publication.
  • Gamboa entered as the WBA #3 lightweight contender, while Perez entered as the WBA #2 lightweight contender.
  • Gamboa was unranked at 135 pounds when the WBA sanctioned the fight. Then, after the fight was made, in the April rankings, Gamboa, with zero accomplishment at 135 pounds, was installed as the No. 3 contender by the WBA.
  • HBO's Steve Weisfeld scored the bout 115-112 in favor Gamboa.
  • Perez was ruled down in the opening round as his feet became tangled as Gamboa was punching. Gamboa went down in the 11th round from what was ruled to be slip. Perez landed a left on Gamboa, whose back foot slipped on one of the many ring advertisements.
