In 1956 he won the Open New York Daily News Golden Gloves' championship vs. Raymond Smith at flyweight, representing New York he won the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship at bantamweight vs. Vince Doniero and upset Heiji Shimabukuro of Honolulu, the defending flyweight champion, in the opening of the three-day tournament and went on to win the National AAU at flyweight.
In 1957 he won the Open New York Daily News Golden Gloves' championship vs. Raymond Smith at flyweight, the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions vs. Robert Lefebvre of Lowell, MA by decision at flyweight, representing New York he won the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship at flyweight vs. Pat Moore and the National AAU at flyweight.
