In 1953 Joseph Belleau of the PAL made the final of the New York Daily News Golden Gloves' open championship with the verdict being awarded to Jackie Spurgeon.
In 1954 he won the New York Daily News Golden Gloves' open championship vs. Norman Thomas of the CBC of Harlem CYO at flyweight, won the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions at flyweight and won the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship at flyweight vs. Bernard Dean.
