In 1953 fighting out of Great Lakes, IL he won the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions vs. Sammy Williams of Omaha, NE in the middleweight division by decision and the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship stopping William Ford at 2:26 of the 1st in the middleweight division.
