Cliff Hart came from a fighting family (brother Don was a professional fighter, and brother Ray "Butch" Hart was an amateur boxer), and started boxing at the age of four under the tutelage of his father, James P. Hart, a former fighter from Syracuse, New York. He was later trained by Syracuse's Irving Robbins.
Hart won the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions vs. Rudy "Ray" Cervantes, and an Intercity Golden Gloves' championship vs. Julius Menendez in 1946, boxing in the welterweight division.
Hart served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
