History
The featherweight division originated in the early 1860s, and by the 1880s possibly covered all weights between 116 and 128 pounds. Said to have been first created in 1860 under the London Prize Ring Rules as 118 pounds (53.5 kg or 8 stone 6 lbs).
Weight Limit Variations
1889 - Established by the Amateur Boxing Association of England Ltd (ABA) as 126 pounds (57.2 kg or 9 stone)
1889 - Changed under Marquess of Queensberry Rules to 110 pounds
1890 - Changed to 115 pounds (52.2 kg or 8 stone 3 lbs) when George Dixon beat Cal McCarthy
1891 - Dixon's manager then changed to 120 pounds (54.4 kg or 8 stone 8 lbs) when Dixon beat Abe Willis
1909 - Modified by London's National Sporting Club (NSC) as 126 pounds (57.2 kg or 9 stone)
