Notes
Timeline
- On April 13, it was officially announced that Klitschko would face Tyson Fury in a rematch on July 9 in Manchester.[1]
- On June 24, Tyson Fury announced that the fight had to be postponed: "Hey guys, I got a little bit of bad news for you all. About 10 days ago, I was running and I went over my ankle, sprained my ankle. I've been to the hospital and had X-rays and MRI scans and all that stuff. They say it's not broken but it's badly sprained. Keep off it for 6-7 weeks."[2]
- On June 26, promoter Eddie Hearn told Sky Sports that Joshua would take a long rest after defending his title against Dominic Breazeale before returning "likely" in November. He acknowledged his interest in scheduling a showdown against Klitschko.[3]
- On July 1, Eddie Hearn told Daily Mail that Joshua would return to the ring in November or December; he named Parker, Bryant Jennings, former WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne and Kubrat Pulev among considered candidates, as well as "the possibility next year of Wladimir Klitschko, with the uncertainty surrounding Tyson Fury's future at the moment."[4]
- On July 4, Fury's uncle Peter Fury confirmed that Klitschko-Fury was rescheduled for October 29.[5] Tyson himself publicly confirmed the date three days later.[6]
- Fury did not show up for the press-conference scheduled for September 12 in London. Though official reason was that Fury's car had trouble on the motorway "with phone battery dead", Klitschko hinted that he had doubts whether the rematch takes place after all.[7]
- On September 23, Klitschko's team was notified by Fury's promoter that Fury was out of action for several months due to medical reasons, thus the rematch had to be cancelled. "The situation really is depressing for Wladimir. Since Fury cannot box for a long time, the world boxing organizations will react for sure. We are waiting for their prompt decision", Klitschko's manager Bernd Boente responded in reaction to the news.[8]
- On September 24, Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn tweeted that he had reached out to Klitschko's manager Bernd Boente. At the same time, Hearn acknowledged potential obstacles in the way of the showdown, including contractual details regarding the Klitschko-Fury rematch.[9]
- On October 2, Hearn insisted in an interview with The Telegraph that the Joshua-Klitschko showdown for November or December is "still very much on the cards": "Klitschko wants the fight, AJ wants the fight, that's always a great sign".[10]
- On October 10, Hearn said that Joshua-Klitschko was "almost there", though he wanted to wait with the official announcement until "all the boxes are ticked".[11]
- Contracts signed between October 11-16, 2016.[12][13]
- On October 16, Hearn told BBC Radio 5 Live that the Klitschko deal "is there": "Anthony Joshua has agreed to fight Wladimir Klitschko, Wladimir Klitschko has agreed to fight Anthony Joshua. The financial terms have been agreed. We had a problem with US broadcasters, with the two being on different networks, that's sorted out. So now it's just a case of getting the paperwork sorted out, the sanctions sorted out."[14]
- Two days later, Hearn told Sky Sports that the WBA was still yet to sanction the bout: "The deal is there but we are awaiting sanction from the WBA. Both teams have written to the WBA to request sanctioning of our fight, but Wladimir wants the WBA belt on the line so until that is approved we cannot move forward. We expect news in the next few days, but in the meantime I believe both sides will look at alternative options for December 10 while we hope to get the news we need to make the fight happen."[15]
- On October 20, Hearn acknowledged that he was not hopeful anymore of scheduling the fight in December, as WBA had still not responded.[16]
- Klitscko's manager Bernd Boente confirmed in an interview on October 24 that the fight had to be put on hold until spring for a variety of reasons, which included WBA's lack of response on whether it would sanction the bout, lack of time for promotion and an injury Klitschko had suffered the week before.[17][18] Joshua instead went on to face Molina.
- After Joshua easily defeated Molina on December 12, Eddie Hearn entered the ring and announced: "I'd like now to bring Wladimir Klitschko to the ring, and I'm officially announcing the fight against Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium on 29 April." Klitschko entered the ring and congratulated Joshua on his victory before confirming the showdown.[19][20]
Ranking Movements
- Long-reigning heavyweight champion Klitschko was steadily ranked as the No. 1 contender by The Ring Magazine ever since being dethroned by Tyson Fury on November 28, 2015, and remained as such entering the fight.
- Klitschko also remained highly rated by the WBA and the WBO: WBA had him rated first for at least a year going into the fight, only behind Regular Champion Ruslan Chagaev and Interim Champion Luis Ortiz, while WBO had him rated second, behind Joseph Parker, since April 16.
- Meanwhile, IBF did not have Klitschko in its Top 15 for the entirety of 2016 up until December 14 when he was swiftly promoted to No. 3. With the No. 1 spot vacant, Klitschko was effectively the second highest-rated contender, behind Kubrat Pulev.
