In 1952 Spurgeon defeated Segundo Perez of the Police Athletic League in the finals to win the Championship and in 1953 Spurgeon defeated Joseph Belleau of the Police Athletic League in the finals to win the Championship. Spurgeon trained at the Police Athletic League.
