Major Jones died in 1974 of gunshot wounds he had suffered nine years earlier. In 1944 he won the National AAU, the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions by decision over Joe Red D'Amato and the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship over Frank Perone all in the featherweight division.
