According to the March 25, 1947 Tacoma News Tribune (Tacoma, WA, USA):
- Hawkins, "a scrappy grade school youngster," decided to take up boxing when former champion Jack Dempsey made an appearance in Klamath Falls, OR. Dempsey remained his hero ever since, and Hawkins never missed the chance to attend fight movies in which Dempsey appeared.
- Born in Oregon, and raised in Klamath Falls, Hawkins was a former Portland University football player, and an ex-air corps enlisted man.
- By March 1947, Hawkins had been fighting less than a year, and amassed 10 KOs in 13 bouts, losing one decision to George Millich. (Actually, it appears Hawkins had lost more bouts than this newspaper article mentions.)
- He was 24-years-old
- He had married a girl from Raymond, WA
- He owned a logging truck with which he did his own falling and hauling when not boxing
- Leo Lomski was training him in 1946, teaching Hawkins his "famous heart punch"
- By the time of his April 1948 bout with Joe Kahut, he was being trained by former Midddleweight contender Jack Chase.
