In 1947 he won the Chicago Golden Gloves Tourament of Champions by decision over Keith Nuttall of Kansas City, Mo in the featherweight division and won the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship in the featherweight division by decision over Leo Kelly. As a member of the Chicago Golden Gloves Team representing the United States vs. Europe at featherweight he won vs. Kurt Kreuger of Sweden.
