1 - The Canadian Champ, Bobby Ebber, had refused to meet either Foley or Johnston. The Canadian Boxing Federation therefore stripped Ebber from his title, and promised the title to the winner of the fight between Foley and Johnston. However, Foley could not make weight and the CBF awarded Johnston the title notwithstanding the result of the fight, which was a draw.
2 - Villeneuve had previously been named Canadian champion in October 1928 without winning the title in the ring. The champion at the time was Jackie Johnston, but he had put on so much weight since winning the title that the board of the Canadian Boxing Federation did not think he could compete at Bantamweight any longer. Instead of declaring the title vacant, Villeneuve, the #1 contender at the time, was simply installed as the new champion.
