- Purported to only have had 19 amateur bouts.
- Lost his professional debut by a second-round knockout on November 14, 1971, six weeks before his 14th birthday.
- Won the Mexican welterweight title with a 10th-round TKO of Jose Palacios on September 27, 1975.
- Defeated Angel Espada by a second-round TKO to win the WBA welterweight title on July 17, 1976. The 18-year-old Cuevas became the youngest boxer ever to win a world welterweight title.
- Successfully defended the WBA welterweight title 11 times. The only challenger to go the distance with Cuevas was Randy Shields, who lost by a 15-round unanimous decision on July 30, 1979.
