Amateur Achievements

• Starling had a purported amateur record of: 97-13
• Welterweight semi-finalist at the 1977 National AAU tournament, losing to Mike McCallum.
• Welterweight finalist at the 1975 and 1979 New England Golden Gloves tournament, losing both times to Robbie Sims.

Professional Career

• Knocked out Charles Newell in seven rounds in 1980. Newell later died from the injuries he suffered in the fight.
• In his first attempt to win a world title, Starling lost a fifteen-round unanimous decision to WBA/IBF welterweight champion Donald Curry in 1984.
• Knocked out Mark Breland in eleven rounds to win the WBA welterweight title in 1987.
• Retained the WBA welterweight title with a disputed twelve-round draw in a rematch with Mark Breland in 1988. Most felt Starling had won the fight.
• Lost the WBA welterweight title to Tomas Molinares in 1988. Starling was knocked out with a punch that was thrown after the bell had rung to end the sixth round. The New Jersey Athletic Control Board later changed the result to a no contest, but the WBA didn't reinstate Starling as champion.
• Knocked out Lloyd Honeyghan in nine rounds to win the Lineal/WBC welterweight title in 1989.
• In an attempt to win the IBF middleweight title, Starling lost a twelve-round majority decision to Michael Nunn in 1990.
• Lost the Lineal/WBC welterweight title to Maurice Blocker by a twelve-round majority decision in 1990. It was Starling's last fight.
• KO Magazine named Starling the 4th best welterweight of the 1980s.
• Inducted into the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005.
• Starling has a record of 4-3-1 with 1 NC and 2 KOs in world title fights.
